Who we are

Founded in 2004, Etica offers a management team with extensive knowledge of all aspects of editorial and production principles and procedures, built through decades of experience. Our in-depth knowledge of publishing processes, including the latest digital technology, allows us to devise and deliver the most cost-effective solutions possible whilst always ensuring that the highest editorial standards are upheld.

We manage a large team of high quality professionals, enabling us to provide entirely flexible editorial, production and training services – from discrete editorial functions such as copyediting and proofreading, to the project management of individual titles, to the management of entire publishing lists on an ongoing basis.

We have been operating for more than a decade, and our clients have included Bloomsbury Professional, Jordans, Penguin, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Taylor & Francis, Hodder, CCH, Hart Publishing, University of Wales Press, as well as a host of independent publishers and self-publishers. We had a 30-year association with leading law publisher LexisNexis, for which we managed the publication of many hundreds of titles. In 2008 we were commissioned by the Irish Government to manage the production of the hugely influenital report of the Ryan Commission, which was published in May 2009.

The management team

With more than 30 years’ experience of professional publishing, Managing Director JD Roskams has gained extensive editorial and production expertise in all publishing formats – textbooks, looseleafs, journals, law reports and various multimedia and online forms. He developed an early and abiding interest in desktop publishing and its descendants which has given him a keen understanding of the workings of, and relationship between, the editorial and production functions. His management skills focused on delivering products quickly and economically, but with no diminution in quality. This culminated in his managing at LNUK Butterworths the outsourcing of an extensive textbook list, using a large, well-motivated and trained team of freelances – an operation that saw titles published more quickly but at lower cost than had ever before been seen at LNUK. He co-founded Etica to allow this dedicated management function to be offered to other publishers.

The editorial team

Etica manages a team of more than a dozen top quality freelance project managers, and can call upon the services of many more as required. Ranging from sole traders to multi-person limited companies, these project managers have extensive editorial and management skills, gained by working over many years with all the major UK publishing houses. Etica's team also includes more than 100 other freelances in various and diverse publishing capacities, such as editing, proofreading, indexing, tabulating, statutory updating and cover design. This enables Etica to offer clients an unrivalled breadth and quality of service.

Both in terms of the number of freelances and the range of skills they can offer, our team can be as flexible as your publishing programme demands, allowing you to manage the peaks and troughs of your publishing schedule in the most cost-effective manner possible.
